MSPT Coffee Talk 2023 Series 2

Welcome to the MSPT Coffee Talk 2023 Series!

Tuberculosis (TB) is a communicable disease that is a major cause of illness. TB is the 13th leading cause of death and the second leading infectious killer after COVID-19 (above HIV/AIDS).

Tuberculosis is caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) bacteria, which is easily transmitted through airborne transmission and highly resistant to environmental conditions. Tuberculosis is most commonly associated with the lungs (pulmonary TB), but it can also affect other parts of the body (extrapulmonary TB).

Treatment of tuberculosis is administered in both oral and injectable dosage form, but patients do not widely accept the conventional approach to treat tuberculosis due to prolonged treatment periods with multiple high doses of drugs and associated side effects resulting in poor patients compliance.

With these limitations, a method for delivering drugs in the form of aerosol directly into the lungs is developed. Inhalable novel drug delivery formulations, like liposomes, microparticles and nanoparticles are more advantageous due to their physical and chemical stability, improved flowability, dispersion, tissue distribution, non-invasive, directly to the lungs especially targeting to alveolar macrophage, may prevent multidrug-resistant tuberculosis, improving the efficacy of treatment and decreasing the adverse effect, thereby reducing the dose frequency and duration of treatment are shorten. As a result, the patients compliacne may increase.
